Master of Advanced Study in Geographic Education

Our Promise to You:

A Worthwhile Investment
A discipline-specific Master's Degree is essential for your teaching career, due to the No Child Left Behind Act's "Highly Qualified Teacher" requirements. The MAS-GE degree program is a flexible master's degree focusing on your needs, while adapting the program's assessments to maximize your experience. Without traveling to classes, you can earn this degree in taking courses during the summer (and winter intersession). A degree in geography education will not only enhance your ability to teach this area of the social sciences, but also provide you with techniques for integration of material into other subjects. Our promise is that every hour that you spend earning your master's degree will be a worthwhile investment in personal growth and improvement as a teacher. We promise to do everything possible to avoid meaningless "edubabble" assignments that would have little personal or professional value.

The first 7 classes (or 24 credits) focus on increasing your geographic knowledge. You will gain new insights into human-Earth interactions; study patterns created by nature and people, and learn how principles of geography and its techniques are used by geographers. In these courses, your assignments will focus on adapting and applying your new knowledge to the classroom. You will learn state-of-the-art, truly fascinating geographical knowledge and how to use the knowledge to improve your classroom.

The last 2 classes (or 6 credits) focus on learning about educational research and developing an applied project. This is not a thesis, but a "capstone experience" aimed at integrating the entire program through the lens of a classroom.

No Logistical Hurdles
You already work very hard as an educator: that's why we created this flexible degree. You don't need to be hassled with driving and trying to find a parking spot: that's why this program is all online.

An Individualized Approach
We cap our enrollment to make sure there is a focus on your needs. We will visit you in your own classroom if you need help. We work diligently to understand your prior background in adapting the program assessments to help maximize your learning. We do this because we believe that a true master's experience must be individualized.
