ASU Chapter, American Society of Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASU-ASPRS)

Purpose:

The Arizona State University student chapter of the American Society for Photogrammetry and Remote Sensing (ASPRS) is an imaging and geospatial information organization, sponsored by the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning. Its purpose is to promote the exchange of ideas and information relating to remote sensing and photogrammetry. Our goals are to propagate interest in those fields and to prepare student members for successful careers. Activities include guest speakers and poster sessions. We welcome members throughout the year.

2007-2008 Events:

The ASU chapter of ASPRS was organized in Fall 2007. In this inaugural year, it has hosted the following events:

Organization Kickoff (Nov 13) -- Kickoff and informational event, with guest speakers Mr. Leland J. Harbers, ASPRS National Director and Dr. Stephen R. Yool, President of the Southwest Region of ASPRS.

Brown Bag: Finding the data you need (April 4) -- At this session, four directors of key data repositories describied the types of data they have, and, how students, faculty and researchers can gain use of these data! Speakers were: Corrina Gries from GIOS (Director of Data Management, Global Institute of Sustainability); Jana Hutchins from ISSR (GIS Manager, Institute for Social Science Research); Lela Prashad from the 100 Cities Project (Director of 100 Cities Project, which specializes in urban remote sensing products) and Mary Whelan, from Hayden Library (Geospatial Data Manager, Informatics and Cyber-infrastructure.

Recognition:

Two School of Geographical Sciences students were selected for awards being given for the first time this year by the ASPRS Southwest Region. PhD student Gabriel Judkins earned the 2008 Graduate Student Achievement Award for Image-based Studies; while Penny DeLuca was awarded the Undergraduate Student Achievement Award for GIS-based Studies. Congratulations Gabe and Penny!
