Arizona Republic: Ellin comments on Phoenix light-rail as new artists' venue

In its August 8 edition, the Arizona Republic describes a trend in which local bands, theater troupes and charity organizations stage events on the trains of Phoenix's Metro light-rail.

In the article, Associate Professor and Planning Program Director Nan Ellin comments that much of metro Phoenix lacks the population density needed to make more traditional settings like parks serve well as public stages.   The train cars, she says, are evolving as an alternative public space.  "All people need a public realm.  These are like community living rooms.  Part of the need for the public realm is to have a stage where we can be spectators, and the reverse, where we can be spectacles."
