Friends of Geography
Who are the Friends of Geography?

The Friends of Geography is a support group made up of alumni, faculty and friends of the geography programs in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University. The group's mission statement is as follows:
ASU Friends of Geography is a volunteer membership organization dedicated to supporting excellence in geographic education and research at Arizona State University. Friends of Geography will solicit private support for scholarships and scholarship endowments, visiting lectures, travel and other needs as identified by the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning. Friends of Geography also will seek opportunities to promote the recognition and reputation of the ASU geography programs and their faculty and students.
The Friends of Geography is made up of well over 100 individuals. Members pay annual dues to the organization, and in return receive the organization's newsletter, which provide information about Friends field trips and School news and events.
The Friends are strong supporters dedicated to raising funds for scholarships and scholarship endowments. The school has seven endowments, and the friends were strong advocates in getting these endowments established.
Those endowments are:
-
The Ray Henkel Endowment, which provides an award for the highest ranking junior geography major.
-
The Matt Bailey and Mel Marcus Endowments, which provide funds for student research, especially field research.
-
The Malcolm L. Comeaux Lecture Fund, which supports an annual public lecture by a highly prominent geographer.
-
The John F. Lounsbury Travel Fellowship, which finances the travel of outstanding new graduate students to present their research at professional meetings.
-
The Balling Family GIS Fellowship Endowment, which honors outstanding performance by a student enrolled in the M.A.S.-G.I.S. program.
The Friends are currently supporting development of funds for a new scholarship, the Anthony J. Brazel Research Exam Award, which recognizes outstanding work by a Ph.D. student on the school's research exam.
These awards are announced and presented to the students at an annual Awards Ceremony.
