GTU Trip: Arcosanti and Montezuma's Well
North of Phoenix
There's a field trip next Saturday, Sept 27. We're going to two fascinating places. First, we'll go to Arcosanti, the experimental urban community that is the brainchild of world-reknowned "arcologist" Paolo Soleri. Arcology is Soleri's term for the combination of architecture and ecology, We'll get a tour from Soleri's long-time right-hand man, Roger Tomalty, a former geography grad student. Arcosanti is about 90 minutes north on I-17. For more info, see http://www.arcosanti.org/.
Then we'll go to Montezuma's Well, an archeological ruin a little bit farther up I-17 near Sedona. Montezuma's Well is part of Montezuma's Castle National Monument. It's a unique geologic feature with a permanent lake in a collapsed limestone cavern, species that are found only there, 1000-year-old Sinaguan cliff dwellings, and a million gallons of water per day flowing into a small ancient agricultural canal. http://www.nps.gov/moca/
Please sign up on the sign-up sheet in the main office of the School of Geographical Sciences. The dept van (seats 9) will leave from the front of SCOB at 9 a.m. and we plan to return by 4 p.m. You can bring a lunch or buy lunch at Arcosanti's café. Bring water, hat, sunblock, camera, and lunch (optional).
Faculty, grad students, staff, and undergrads are welcome.
