Key Information for Incoming Graduate Students, Fall 2009

Orientation

Orientation will be held on August 21st. It is required for all new students. See event details (time, location, etc.).

Health Insurance

If you would like to enroll in ASU Health Coverage:

  1. Using your ASURITE ID, in at www.my.asu.edu.
  2. Under My Accounts, click on Student Health Insurance, then click Enroll/Cancel Student Health Insurance

Students who elect health insurance for the fall semester will automatically be enrolled for health insurance for the spring semester and summer sessions. International students are required to have ASU student health insurance. The university is no longer accepting outside carriers for meeting the insurance requirement for international students. If you are a Teaching Assistant or Research Assistant the cost of health insurance is waived, but you will still need to elect coverage from My ASU (see above). Immunizations

Immunization records must be submitted prior to course registration. For information about immunizations and to download an Immunization Record Submission form, please go to www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/health/nurseclinic/immunizations/immunizationsrecordssubmission.pdf.

Required courses:

MA in Geography

As a Masters student in Geography, you are required to complete at least 30 credit hours. A maximum of 9 semester hours of ASU graduate credit completed before admission (i.e. taken as a non-degree graduate student) may be applied towards the 30 semester hours. These graduate hours must be approved by the supervisory committee and included in the program of study.

Required courses are as follows:

  1. GCU 529 Geographic Thought and Theory (3 credits) - FALL ONLY
  2. GCU 585 Advanced Research Methods (3 credits) - SPRING ONLY
  3. GCU/GPH 591 Seminar (3 credits)
  4. GCU/GPH 591 Geography Colloquium (1 credit) - MUST BE TAKEN BOTH FALL & SPRING OF FIRST YEAR IN PROGRAM
  5. GCU/GPH 599 Thesis (6 credits)

GCU 529 is usually offered in the fall with GCU 585 in the spring. Both of these classes along with GCU/GPH 591 Colloquium are required your first year. GCU/GPH 599 will not be taken until you are closer to completing your thesis.

Masters in Urban and Environmental Planning

As an MUEP student, you are required to complete 47 credit hours without an Internship or 50 with the optional Internship. You have the option of completing a Capstone Studio/Workshop (PUP 580), a Professional Project (PUP 593) or a Thesis (PUP 599).

It is recommended that you register for the following courses for fall:

  1. PUP 501 The Idea of Planning
  2. PUP 520 Planning and Research Methods
  3. PUP 524 Planning Theory and Processes
  4. One elective related to your specialization area which can be found at http://www.design.asu.edu/planning/curriculum.shtml

A statistics course is a pre-requisite for our program and is critical to your success in PUP 524. If you have not completed a statistics course in your undergraduate studies, it is highly recommended that you completed a course during the summer. Statistics should be taken in a Social Sciences discipline. If you plan on completing a statistics course in the fall, plan on taking PUP 524 the following fall.

PhD in Geography

As a PhD student, you are required to complete at least 84 credit hours with 30 hours being from your previous Master's degree. A maximum of 9 semester hours of ASU graduate credit completed before admission (i.e. taken as a non-degree graduate student) may be applied towards the 84 semester hours. These graduate hours must be approved by the supervisory committee and included in the program of study.

PhD in Urban Planning

The School anticipates offering a PhD in Urban Planning in the fall of 2010. Information will be posted as it becomes available.

International Students

As an International student, you will want to review the ISO website at http://www.asu.edu/studentaffairs/ed/iso/. There are lots of resources available on this website. You will want to be in contact with an ISO advisor from time to time to make sure everything is up to date with your information. There are regulations as to how many credits you must be enrolled in (at least 9, or 6 if working as an RA), how many hours you may work and health insurance. All international students must enroll in the ASU health insurance plan, and cost for medical coverage is included in the registration billing.

Financial Assistance

Information about financial assistance can be found at http://students.asu.edu/financial-aid. You will need to complete a Federal Application for Financial Student Assistance (FAFSA) which can be found at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov.

Teaching Assistants

If you have been hired as a teaching assistant (TA) for the fall semester and have not completed the Teaching Assistant Development (TAD) program you are required to do so before you begin teaching. The TAD program is administered through Blackboard. Blackboard can be accessed by logging into www.my.asu.edu (ASURITE ID and password required). The TAD Blackboard site will be available on July 20, 2009. Enrollment should occur automatically. TAs who cannot see the course after July 20, 2009 should email TAD-Q@asu.edu for assistance.

Decisions regarding TA positions will be made close to the start of the semester with applications being accepted year round.

ASU Sun card ID

You will need to get an ASU Sun card ID once you are on campus. For more information see http://uabf.asu.edu/suncard_get.

Parking and Transportation

If you plan to park on ASU's campus, you will need to purchase a parking permit. Please see the Parking and Transportation website for more information on transportation and parking permits at http://uabf.asu.edu/parking_transportation.
