Ph.D. Admission Procedures and Requirements
The School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning admits students to its Ph.D. program with either a Master's or Bachelor's degree in Geography or a related field. To apply to the program:
- Complete the ASU Graduate College's online application. As part of this application, you will submit:
- Send University transcript(s) documenting successful completion of a Bachelors' Degree and/or a Master's Degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0 (4.0 scale) in the final two years of undergraduate study and M.A. courses (if applicable). Send transcripts to the address below.
- Provide scores for the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Scores should be submitted to the ASU Graduate Admissions Office, University Number #4007.
- If English is not your native language, provide scores for one of the following:
- TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language - minimum score of 550 (PBT) or 80 (iBT)
- IELTS (International English Language Testing System) - minimum overall band score of 6.5 with no individual band below a 6.0.
- Arrange for three letters of reference. The letters should be from academic professionals capable of evaluating your geographic expertise and promise for carrying out advanced scholarly research. In the online application, you may enter the email addresses of your 3 references, and they will be contacted directly for their letters. Alternately, you may ask your references to send their letters to the address below.
- If you are interested in applying for a teaching assistant position with the School, you will fill out a TA/RA application included in the online application.
Owing to the time it takes to process applications, we recommend that you complete your application by January 15, 2010, if you wish to be considered for financial aid from ASU.
