Apply to the MAS-GIS Program
Thank you for your interest in the Master of Advanced Study in Geographic Information Systems (MAS-GIS) in the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning at Arizona State University. To expedite the application process, please send all application materials (recommendation letters as well as transcripts) directly to Robert Balling, Associate Program Director & Recruiting Coordinator, at the School of Geographical Sciences & Urban Planning, Arizona State University, PO Box 875302, Tempe, AZ 85302.
The application process is as follows:
Our MAS-GIS Steering Committee, comprised of geography faculty, reviews all applications. Our admission decisions are based on a variety of criteria and we request that you provide us with the following information.
- Submit a statement of interest and commitment to the MAS-GIS program including a description of relevant academic and/or professional experience.
- Submit two letters of support from any combination of current/former instructors, supervisors, or professionals.
- Complete the ASU Graduate College's online application.
- Send official transcripts directly to Robert Balling at the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning.
We strongly encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Classes are ‘cohort-protected’, meaning only those admitted to the program may take the classes using specific Schedule Line Numbers and the program runs one calendar year, including the fall, spring, and summer sessions. These are all evening classes, the fall semester classes are compressed and non-transferable.
Many students ask about funding for the program, and to that end, a current FAFSA must be on file for any sort of ASU funding. Financial Aid should be spread across the entire program and you need to apply as early as possible for funding for the academic year. While tuition and fees remain subject to change, the costs for the 2008-2009 program were as follows (more details are available from the Graduate College):
| Status | Fall Semester | Spring Semester |
Summer Session | Total Tuition |
| Resident | $8,322 | $8,322 | $5,373 | $22,017 |
| Nonresident | $14,604 | $14,604 | $7,299 | $36,507 |
| Please note that tuition and fees set forth herein or in other University publications or web pages are subject to change. | ||||
