About the Program

The MUEP is accredited by the Planning Accreditation Board (PAB). It is an interdisciplinary, professional degree designed to prepare students for leadership roles in planning in the public and private sectors. The curriculum includes a common core of required courses which provide linkage between knowledge and practice and fundamental theories and skills.

Four specializations are offered within the Master of Urban and Environmental Design program:

  • Community and Urban Development: This specialization provides students with knowledge and skills in areas such as housing, historic preservation, economic and community development, urban design, public policy analysis, transportation, and land use planning.
  • Environmental Planning: This specialization provides students with knowledge and skills in such areas as sustainable design, environmental resources, planning growth management, environmental policy analysis, open space design, and conservation.
  • International Planning: This specialization provides students with knowledge and skills in comparative planning issues and practices in developing and developing countries and their implications for regional development, urban growth, environmental protection, and social and economic justice.
  • Transportation: This specialization provides students with knowledge and skills in the three following areas: transportation and the environment; non-motorized transportation in a safe, livable environment; and transportation, economic development and border issues. These planning courses are an integral part of the Transportation Certification Program. Suggested courses in each specialization provide connections between the planning program and other disciplines at Arizona State University.

The MUEP program offers a unique opportunity to integrate urban and environmental aspects of planning in a rapidly developing metropolitan area. Individual practical experience in planning is provided through an optional internship program and applied research. In addition to the planning faculty, the program is enriched by the interdisciplinary participation of faculty from other academic units of the university and leading planning practitioners from the Phoenix area.
