Supporting the School
The School is fortunate to have many friends and supporters who over the years have created a number of endowments to help promote enhanced scholarship and recognize professional achievement. With the reorganization of the former School of Geographical Sciences and the former School of Planning into the School of Geographical Sciences and Urban Planning, our fundraising efforts have been recast to reflect the contributions by friends and alumni from both constituencies.
The School is dedicated to raising funds to support Scholarships and Fellowships for its undergraduate and graduate students. Currently, the School has seven endowments in place and is in the process of developing another.
Those endowments are:
-
The Balling Family GIS Fellowship Endowment, which honors outstanding performance by a student enrolled in the M.A.S.-G.I.S. program. -
The John F. Lounsbury Travel Fellowship, which finances the travel of outstanding new graduate students to present their research at professional meetings.
- The Malcolm L. Comeaux Lecture Fund, which supports an annual public lecture by a highly prominent geographer.
-
The Matt Bailey Endowment, which provide funds for undergraduate and graduate student research, especially field research.
- The Mary Kihl Leadership Endowment, which recognizes outstanding leadership by a graduate student in planning, and supports ongoing scholastic development in planning.
- The Mel Marcus Endowment, which provide funds for graduate student research, especially field research.
-
The Ray Henkel Endowment, which provides an award for the highest ranking junior geography major.
The School is supporting development of funds for a new scholarship, the Anthony J. Brazel Research Exam Award, which recognizes outstanding work by a Ph.D. student on the school's research exam.
The various awards are announced and presented to the students at an Annual Awards Ceremony.
The Friends of Geography is a support group made up of alumni, faculty and friends of the Geography programs in the School. It was established in 1991 and has played an important role in developing the Geography scholarship endowments. By becoming members of the Friends, supporters of the Geography programs in the School can participate in a number of social events, such as field trips, and contribute to the Geography Endowments.
Director's Club
The Director's Club is a new initiative that recognizes donors whose combined contribution to the School funds totals $1,000 or more per fiscal year (July 1 - June 30). Director's Club members automatically also belong to the Dean's Circle of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, which provides the opportunity to participate in special events, such as lectures, presentations and social gatherings. Director's Club members will receive a briefing on the various School initiatives at an annual luncheon.
